The 24 Hours of Daytona meeting, first round IMSA 2021, officially started with the first free practice. In this 60-minute session, Renger van der Zande had the best time in 1: 34.649 with his Cadillac DPi-VR # 01 from Chip Ganassi Racing. He is ahead of another Cadillac, the # 31 Action Express Racing (winner of Sunday’s qualifying race) driven by Mike Conway.
Harry Tincknell sets the third fastest time at the wheel of the # 55 Mazda RT24-P followed by the # 10 Acura ARX-05 of Wayne Taylor Racing and the # 5 Cadillac DPi of JDC-Miller Motorsports with Loïc Duval on board.
In LMP2, the # 52 Oreca 07 of PR1 / Mathiasen Motorsports, led by Nicolas Lapierre, was the most prominent in front of the # 81 Oreca 07 of DragonSpeed USA and # 29 of Racing Team Nederland. Note that Cody Ware’s Ligier JS P217 # 51 RWR-Eurasia went off the track at the bus stop when there were 12 minutes remaining in the session.
Jeroen Bleekemolen was the fastest in LMP3 with the # 91 Ligier JS P320 entered by Riley Motorsports. CORE autosports (Ligier J P320 # 54) and Muehlner Motorsports America (Duqueine M30-D08 # 6) complete the top 3.
Tommy Milner (Corvette C8.R # 4) dominated the GTLM class and is ahead of Antonio Garcia on the sister car, # 3. Risi Competizione’s # 62 Ferrari 488 GTE is 3rd.
Billy Johnson (Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo # 28 from Alegra Motorsports) finished first in the GTDs. The # 88 Porsche 911 GT3 R from Team Hardpoint EBM and # 9 from Pfaff Motorsports are 2nd and 3rd fastest respectively. The # 111 Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo of Grasser Racing Team (Mirko Bortolotti) came to a stop on the track in turn 1, resulting in a red flag very early in the session.
