With the addition of all-wheel drive on the Toyota Avalon, we suspected that the Lexus ES sooner or later she would benefit too. It is now done for 2021; Lexus also offers a limited edition Black Line.
Although sedans are constantly losing momentum in sales, Lexus continues to be involved in the segment and even adds to it. In the hope of relaunching its midsize sedan, Lexus is offering all-wheel drive on its ES 250 for 2021 for the first time.
The action obviously takes place under the body. Much like the Toyota Avalon, from which the ES is largely derived, a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine is introduced with 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. It's clear that Lexus isn't aiming for high performance with the AWD. In its defense, Lexus maintains that fuel economy is at the fore with an average consumption of 8.4 liters / 100 kilometers. We expected a hybrid engine with an electric motor to move the rear axle; Lexus instead adopts a conservative strategy with a responsive system that favors the front end. Power will only flow to the rear wheels when needed. Interestingly, the system will be able to transfer up to 50% of the torque to the rear wheels.
Also new for 2021 is the Black Line Edition in the ES 350 lineup. Unfortunately, it is still impossible to have all-wheel drive with the 3.5-liter V6; this machine develops 302 horsepower and produces a torque of 267 pound-feet. However, the result is a model that looks quite sportier. It is based on the F-Sport trim, but is only available in Obsidian Black, Ultra White and Ultrasonic Mica Blue. For looks, the mirror housings are painted black as are the rear spoiler, grille frame and 19-inch wheels.
In the interior, an environment tinged with dynamism is offered with an all-over cover in black or gray leather with contrasting stitching. To add a touch of exclusivity, Lexus offers on the Black Line a set of cases created by Zero Halliburton. It is emphasized that the interior of the cases gets a sumptuous trim in addition to being embossed with the emblem and the shape of the Lexus hourglass grille. As this is a special edition, the number of copies is limited to 1,500 for the entire North American market.
These new Lexus ES 2021 will arrive in dealerships this fall. For now, Lexus reserves the price schedules for these new products. Currently, the base price for the 2020 ES line is $ 47,690-49,690 for the ES 300h hybrid.
