Recently available for order, the GR Yaris bomber may not have said everything about its capabilities. Another even sharper version may well land in the near future, as evidenced by the spy shots freshly transmitted by our photographers.
By presenting a three-door city car with a 3-cylinder 1.6 turbo, 100% thermal, 261 hp, 6-speed manual gearbox and all-wheel drive, Toyota threw a hell of a stone in the pond. At a time when small affordable sports cars are deserting the catalogs in order to rationalize carbon footprints, the GR Yaris is out of tune. It had already done so during our first contact with an almost final prototype on the Estoril circuit from December 2019. And while we are still impatiently waiting to be able to get behind the wheel of the version final, the Japanese woman may not have finished surprising her world. Our spy photographers have indeed just surprised a funny GR Yaris on the Nürburgring.
Even more than more
Special feature of this prototype: aerodynamic appendages even more prominent. Whether it's the huge rear spoiler or the fins on the front bumper, everything points to the pursuit of pure performance. Even though the standard version is already proving to be ultra-efficient, Toyota told us last year that they were working on an even more edgy variant of their little sports car.. Which would have, in addition to all-wheel drive, two Torsen limited-slip differentials placed in front and behind. Enough to further perfect the motor skills of this little ball of muscle and optimize the exits of curves.
However, it is better to be careful when seeing these images. If the Japanese can completely optimize the settings of his bombinette to make it a ball on the circuit, like Alpine having a little firmed the A110 S for track day enthusiasts, see the GR Yaris as well on the road seems unlikely. Particularly because of safety standards, which exclude any appendage on the front of the car that would endanger a pedestrian in the event of a collision. The fins that we see here are not really compatible with the regulations. It may therefore be a limited series here. At the same time, these famous fins can also be fictitious, just to muddy the waters … One thing is certain, two versions of the GR Yaris 2020 will be released from the channels.
